So why do we still see so many of us skipping the heat protectant and reaching straight for a 450 degree flat iron as if the hair simply grows back? It doesn't. Not this hair, anyway.

Your extensions deserve better than an afterthought, so let's talk about protectants and maintenance, the unglamorous part of the process that nobody loves to think about, but the exact thing that separates extensions that last a full year from extensions that end up matted, dry, and retired to a drawer within a few months.

Why Protectants Are Non Negotiable

Here's what's important to understand: unlike your natural hair, extension hair is no longer receiving nutrients from your scalp. Once it's off the donor, it relies entirely on what you give it. No protectant means no protection, just breakage waiting to happen.

• Heat protectant is your hair's first line of defense. Every time you reach for a flat iron, curling wand, or blow dryer, protectant spray goes on first. No exceptions, no "just this once."
• Know whether your hair is wet or dry before you reach for a bottle. This distinction matters more than most people realize. If you're styling on wet hair, you need a wet heat protectant, formulated to coat the strand and shield it as the water evaporates under heat. If you're touch styling on dry hair such as flat ironing your hair, that same wet formula will leave hair damp and weigh it down. Instead, reach for a dry protectant mist, lightweight and designed to protect without reintroducing moisture. Using the wrong one doesn't just underperform, it can leave your ends more vulnerable to heat damage.
• UV protection matters too. Sun exposure fades color and dries out the cuticle, especially on our darker shades. A small amount of leave in with UV filters is essential on sunny days.
• Know your silicone rules. This one matters: silicone based serums should be avoided on our Raw Collection. Since it's single donor and completely unprocessed, silicone builds up on the cuticle and works against the hair's natural texture over time. Luxe Virgin hair, on the other hand, thrives with silicone serums for revival and maintenance. They seal the cuticle, lock in moisture, and keep that shine looking freshly installed even weeks later. The Maintenance Routine That Actually Works

Think of this as a skincare regimen, but for your hair.

1. Wash smart, not often. Sulfate free shampoo, cool water, and always brush before washing (never after) to prevent tangling and shedding at the wefts or bonds.
2. Never bunch it up or scrunch. This one is essential: never bunch your extensions together or scrunch shampoo and conditioner in as you would with hair growing from your scalp, that's a fast track to matting you can't undo. Fully detangle before you even turn on the water, and remember, detangling happens end to root, the opposite direction from how you brush during the actual wash. Once you're in the shower with product applied, switch to brushing root to ends, keeping the hair smooth and tangle free throughout the entire wash.
3. Deep condition Bi weekly. Your extensions don't produce their own oils, so it's up to you to replace that moisture. A bi weekly mask keeps the hair soft rather than brittle.
4. Sleep on satin or silk. Cotton pillowcases pull moisture out and create friction, which leads to frizz and tangles overnight.
5. Invest in a satin bonnet. A satin or silk bonnet before bed makes a real difference, it keeps your hair contained, minimizes friction against any fabric you rest on, and protects your bonds and wefts from shifting while you sleep. An essential step if you want your install to last.
6. Brush from the bottom up. Always start at the ends and work your way toward the roots with a detangling brush. Pulling from the top is how you lose length quickly.
7. Space out your wash days. Overwashing strips natural oils and loosens tape and weft bonds prematurely. The ideal frequency is once every two weeks. If you've used heavier styling products, an earlier wash is perfectly fine, just don't exceed once a week.
